Li Gou (LR5): An Acupoint Essential for Every Woman

The Li Gou acupoint stands out as a must-know point for improving women’s gynecological health.

Women’s health has come a long way, yet more than half of U.S. women skip annual OB-GYN checkups. Today’s featured acupoint serves as a powerful reminder that your health matters. Just six minutes of attention to this point each day can make a difference in your well-being.
Some issues—like genital itchiness and irregular periods—might not always seem urgent enough to require immediate medical attention, but they can significantly disrupt daily life. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers an effective complementary approach to healing, and Li Gou (Liver 5) stands out as a must-know point for improving gynecological health.
While Western medicine attributes infections to external pathogens, TCM sees them as signs of internal imbalance—particularly within the liver meridian (paths that carry vital energy throughout the body). The best part? Both systems agree that strengthening the body’s natural defenses is key to recovery and prevention. Let’s see how it can be done from the TCM perspective.

Li Gou’s Benefits and Functions

Li Gou is one of the most recommended acupoints for gynecological health, known to help with:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Excessive vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal infections and itchiness
  • Swelling and discomfort in the lower abdomen

Vaginal infections often come with irritation and discomfort, yet many hesitate to seek help until symptoms become severe. Instead of suffering in silence, incorporating acupressure on Li Gou into your current treatment regimen can enhance relief and support faster recovery.

Surprisingly, Li Gou isn’t just for women. According to the classic TCM text “Ling Shu,” men can also benefit—especially for swollen testicles or difficulty urinating. When you view the liver meridian as an energy highway, it makes sense—keeping the entire pathway clear ensures a smooth flow of energy.

Science and Tradition

While Western medicine emphasizes the immune system in fighting infections, TCM attributes a similar role to the liver meridian, responsible for the smooth circulation of energy and blood. When this pathway becomes blocked, symptoms like infections, abnormal discharge, and pain can arise. Stimulating Li Gou enhances liver function, helping the body detoxify and strengthening reproductive health.

Beyond its physiological benefits, Li Gou’s name and history offer intriguing insights. Ancient texts liken the shape of the calf muscle to a ladle, clam, or calabash—a visual reference that can help you locate the acupoint. Interestingly, the Chinese character li (蠡) includes two 虫 radicals representing insects or bugs. Long before the germ theory was established, these radicals were used to signify external pathogens, a meaning that still holds in some modern Chinese contexts.

How to Locate and Stimulate Li Gou

Li Gou is found on the inner side of the lower leg, approximately five inches above the inner ankle bone. To locate it, run your fingers up from the bony prominence of your inner ankle—you’ll feel a tender spot. That’s Li Gou.

Activating Li Gou is straightforward:

  1. Thumb Pressure Method: Press firmly with your thumb for 5–10 seconds, release for 5 seconds, and repeat for 1–3 minutes on each leg.
  2. Circular Rubbing Method: Use firm pressure and massage in small circles over the point for 1–3 minutes on each leg.

For deeper stimulation, techniques like acupuncture, cupping, or moxibustion (a gentle heat therapy with dried mugwort) can be performed by a TCM professional.

Who Can Benefit and Who Should Avoid Li Gou

Li Gou is often recommended for women looking to address or prevent gynecological concerns. It’s also a proactive point for general reproductive health. Men can benefit, too, particularly for urinary or testicular issues.

However, there are exceptions:

  • Pregnant women should avoid stimulating Li Gou, as the liver meridian is closely linked to blood and energy flow
  • Those with ankle injuries should avoid pressure on the affected area
  • People with severe health conditions should consult a professional before trying acupressure

Your Health Deserves Your Attention

Consider taking a few minutes each day to explore Li Gou and observe how your body reacts. If you feel significant discomfort, your body likely needs this point more than you realize.

For a fun experiment, compare sensations with a partner—who feels it more intensely? Whether you’re looking to invest in your gynecological health or simply want to strengthen your body’s defenses, Li Gou is a helpful tool to add to your wellness arsenal.
