The lack of in-depth analysis of Gaza reveals the sorry state of Western media.
As Israel is in the process of rolling out a horrendous, deliberate, and systematic destruction of Palestinian people and razing Gaza to the ground, it remains the most underreported major conflict of modern times. We sorely need the kind of in-depth and incisive reporting that WikiLeaks supplied in their heyday.
For those who use independent media sources like telegram, there is no shortage of shocking footage to be found, but only around 11% of the world use it. Other platforms like facebook are heavily censoring and even removing posts on the subject.
There are two main reasons why we are not getting accurate and damning reporting on the real situation:
Firstly: Israel’s war on Gaza has killed 232 journalists, making it the deadliest conflict for media workers ever recorded, according to a report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs’ Costs of War project.
And secondly, according to Reporters Without Borders, The Israelis have imposed an exclusion zone across Gaza for journalists since about march of last year, so it is a war zone with very few mainstream journalists present to record the goings on.
Twenty four years ago, the U.S. embarked on their “War On Terror” (an oxymoron, no?). Two years later, The U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 was primarily justified by claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and was supporting terrorism, particularly al-Qaeda. In 2010, WikiLeaks published the Afghan War Logs and the Iraq War Logs. Wikileaks played a role in highlighting these issues by publishing documents that shed light on the intelligence failures and the lack of evidence for WMDs.
As we explain in THE TRUST FALL: “In 2008, a plan to destroy both WikiLeaks and Julian was laid out in a secret document. The authors were the Cyber Counter Intelligence Assessment Branch of the US Defense Department.
They tried to destroy Assange and WikiLeaks. They failed as both are still alive and strong, but they certainly interrupted the great work the WikLeaks was doing and also effectively warded off similar independent media organisations from emulating their blueprint and their successes.
The world sorely needs WikiLeaks to bounce back bigger and better than before, or someone else brave and clever enough to provide the kind of earth shaking releases that they dished out, with their astonishing and world changing accuracy.
We need the kind of top level journalism that WikiLeaks provided in order to expose war crimes and hopefully prevent more of these abominations in the future. And we need the public to wake up to the military industrial complex and the brutality of the U.S. and Israel.
Julian said in 2011: “If wars can be started by lies, peace can be started by truth”. The dissemination of truth is yet to reach levels of abundance that will bring about world peace, because the truth is being targeted, killed and burnt alive in Gaza and all across the world through the violence invoked on journalists.
