Oxitec has recently withdrawn its application to release GM mosquitoes in Australia in after facing strong public and scientific opposition. The proposed plan (DIR 207) sought approval to release genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to help prevent dengue outbreaks. The application was formally withdrawn from the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR).
