Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to issue new orders, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said
The US-brokered 30-day moratorium on strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has officially expired, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed, signaling that Moscow has yet to announce further steps.
Russia and Ukraine agreed to a limited ceasefire following a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on March 18. However, Russia has accused Ukraine of repeatedly violating the moratorium, claiming that Kiev’s forces carried out more than 120 strikes on energy targets in several Russian regions.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Peskov noted that “the month [of moratorium] has indeed expired” adding: “As of this moment, there have been no other instructions from the supreme commander-in-chief, President Putin.”
Asked to give his assessment of the partial ceasefire, the spokesman said that Moscow views it positively despite Kiev’s violations. “We believe that certain progress can already be acknowledged. This progress is related to the moratorium on not striking energy infrastructure facilities. The Russian Federation adhered to this moratorium, which cannot be said about the Ukrainian side.”
The halt on energy strikes was agreed as part of talks during which the US and Russia discussed a possible full ceasefire. At the time, however, the Kremlin pointed to numerous obstacles to such an agreement, citing issues related to the need for effective monitoring of any potential ceasefire along the entire line of contact. Moscow also raised concerns about Ukraine’s long record of violating agreements, while stressing the need to halt foreign military and intelligence assistance to Kiev.
On Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington could withdraw from peace negotiations if no progress is made within days. In such a case, the US is “just going to move on,” he said.
In light of this, Peskov acknowledged that the negotiations to secure peace in the Ukraine conflict are “difficult,” but stressed that Moscow remains committed to finding a solution.
