Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was Sentenced in his Home Country to 27 Years in Prison for Attempting a Coup, Reports G1

According to the investigation, the former president, along with aides and military personnel, tried to hold on to power by overthrowing the newly elected president Lula da Silva and seizing government institutions from late 2022 to early 2023.
Bolsonaro and seven others were also found guilty of creating a criminal organization, violently destroying the democratic rule of law, causing damage, and damaging an architectural monument.
He was charged less than a year ago, in November 2024. He is currently under house arrest and will appeal. He is 71 years old.
Bolsonaro was president of the country from 2019 to 2023, after which he was succeeded by da Silva. In January 2023, Bolsonaro supporters, disagreeing with his election defeat, staged protests and riots in the country’s capital. They attempted to seize government buildings. The protests were suppressed by police.
Trump called Bolsonaro’s sentence “terrible” and said he was “very unhappy.” Secretary of State Rubio promised a U.S. response.
It is worth noting that Bolsonaro openly supports Trump, who imposed high tariffs on Brazil.
