Attack Was Unlikely Driven By ‘Any Particular Motivation, Ideology’
The offender behind the Bondi Junction attack was a 40-year-old man from Queensland named Joel Couchy, who came to New South Wales (NSW) in March, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told the media.
Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said the police has spoken with the attacker’s family, adding “they are collaborating with with us.”
“We know that shortly after coming to Sydney he took possession of a storage facility that has been identified and we have worked to through that very small storage facility.”
He reiterated that there have been no evidence suggesting that this was a terrorist attack, and it was highly likely that the attacker has mental health issues.
“We have no information, no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence that we have gathered that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or otherwise we know that the offender in the matter suffered from suffers from mental health,” he said.
“We are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender but very clearly to us at this stage it would appear that this is related to the mental health of the individual involved.”
“Investigations will very clearly continue through the day.

Female Officer Who Shot Attacker Dead Commended
Police also said they were proud of the courageous actions of the female police officer at the scene.
“And can I just say how how proud we are of the actions of the officer involved last night and she will be released receiving all the support that she requires,” Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said.
Previously, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the female police officer had shown “enormous courage and bravery.”
“She would need to be interviewed formally.”
“She’s got everything she needs for the time being and she will be following interview tomorrow, no doubt. She must have been close by and was just the first officer on the scene.”
“Obviously. She’s a very senior officer and it’s not unusual for a senior officer to be supervising and leading troops and so they put shoes on.”
