An Israeli Plumber Who Had Never Flown A Plane Helped Stop One From Crashing
A few days ago, Yaniv was an anonymous plumber.
Then the cockpit of his flight descended into chaos.
He says he heard shouting, felt the aircraft violently move and realized the emergency was coming from the cockpit.
So he ran toward it.
The forces were so strong that he was initially thrown to the floor and physically couldn’t get back up. When the aircraft briefly stabilized, he made it forward, where passengers and crew were struggling to regain control.
Yaniv says he helped overpower the attacker, then saw the aircraft heading toward the ground.
He had never flown a plane.
But he had watched a lot of Air Disasters.
So he grabbed the controls and pulled.
For several seconds, an Israeli plumber with no flight training was helping level an airliner until another pilot could take over.
And perhaps the strangest detail is his military background.
When asked whether anything in the army had prepared him for this, his answer was essentially no.
He had been a cook.
“Closest to the fire. In the kitchen.”
He went from army cook and plumber to wrestling an attacker and grabbing the controls of an airliner because he remembered what he’d seen on a television show.
Human beings occasionally make absolutely no sense in the best possible way.
