Iranian pilots attacked American bases without GPS, according to a deputy coordinator of the Iranian Army’s Air Force, who described how the mission relied on old-fashioned navigation to remain undetected:
“Our pilots were trained to navigate fighter jets on various missions using only maps and basic systems, without relying on GPS or INS [inertial navigation].
Perhaps our advantage was that there was no outgoing signal – not even a radio signal – from our aircraft, and perhaps on the first day, the enemy couldn’t imagine that the air force would have the audacity to carry out such a mission.”
