Rafael Nadal Tennis Center Chooses Lombok, Reinforcing Indonesia’s Rise as a Global Sports and Tourism Destination

The announcement that the first Rafa Nadal Tennis Center in Southeast Asia will open in Lombok in 2028 is another major vote of confidence in Indonesia’s growing international appeal.

According to the announcement, the new centre will feature four tennis courts and four padel courts and will be located within the Samara Lombok development. It will bring the renowned Rafa Nadal Academy training methodology to players of all ages and skill levels while further positioning Lombok as an emerging premium tourism destination.

For Indonesia, the significance extends well beyond tennis.

Lombok has increasingly attracted international investment in luxury resorts, wellness tourism, marinas and lifestyle developments. Global brands selecting Lombok sends a strong message that the island is no longer viewed as simply Bali’s quieter neighbour, but as a destination capable of attracting world-class sporting, tourism and hospitality investments.

Australian entrepreneur and Lux Property Group co-founder Jamie McIntyre said the announcement highlights why Lombok’s long-term prospects remain exceptionally strong.

“When internationally recognised brands such as the Rafa Nadal Academy commit to Lombok, they’re validating what many forward-looking investors have already recognised. Lombok is evolving into one of Asia’s next major lifestyle, wellness and luxury tourism destinations.”

McIntyre said the momentum supports the broader vision for Nesara Bay City, Lux Property Group’s planned eco-resort and mini-city development in South Lombok.

He noted that the proposed Rafa Nadal Tennis Center is planned to be located next door to Nesara Bay City, creating what could become one of Indonesia’s premier integrated sports and lifestyle precincts. The development would complement Nesara Bay City’s own long-term plans, which include a multi-purpose sports stadium, padel tennis centre, convention centre, wellness facilities, luxury accommodation, marina and tourism precinct, creating strong synergies for both residents and visitors.

He believes Indonesia still has enormous untapped potential to become one of the world’s leading destinations for integrated sports, wellness and luxury tourism.

“Imagine combining international tennis facilities, padel courts, wellness retreats, luxury resorts, marinas, yacht clubs, hiking, surfing and world-class beaches, all within the same region. That’s the direction Indonesia can head if infrastructure continues improving.”

The announcement also reflects the rapid global growth of padel, now one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, attracting millions of new players across Europe, the Middle East and increasingly Asia.

McIntyre said Indonesia has an opportunity to become a regional leader by attracting sporting academies, tournaments and high-performance training centres alongside traditional tourism.

“Lombok has extraordinary natural beauty. What it now needs is continued investment in airports, roads, marinas, sporting facilities and integrated tourism developments. Every major international announcement like this helps accelerate that journey.”

With Bali continuing to experience strong tourism demand and increasing congestion in some areas, Lombok is increasingly being viewed as the logical destination for the next wave of premium tourism investment.

The arrival of the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center may prove to be another milestone in that transformation, helping place Lombok firmly on the global sporting and tourism map while complementing the broader vision for South Lombok as an international destination for sport, wellness, business events and luxury tourism.
