If it’s really true that Ukraine is re-taking so much territory in the Lyman-Sloviansk area, it’s very weak performance from the Russians. Maybe Ukraine is only doing raids, and are not able to hold it, we will see, but if we in the coming weeks and months see Ukraine holding on to this area, I’m of the opinion that Russia is surprisingly weak, and will never be able to capture the entire Donetsk region, which is their stated goal.

If this map of the Ukrainian counteroffensive around Lyman is correct it might indicate that the Ukrainians have somehow managed to capture an impressive amount of territory. However, there are a few issues for the Ukrainians. In reality at best the counter offensive can still only be a media victory or at most an attempt to get Russia to come to the negotiating table with terms that might be more favourable to the Ukrainians (although still unlikely). However, the imminent Russian capture of Dobropilia and the vast amount of lands and settlements this will open up to Russia (not to mention the imminent Russian capture of all of the north eastern Kharkov Oblast pocket) kind of negate the gains from the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the big scheme of things regardless. It is simply too isolated. If Ukraine is suddenly making a come back it is a very valid question. Why after so long? As with all the other Ukrainian counter offensives since late 2022 this is more likely than not yet another attempt at a media victory. If even Russia must implement successive mobilizations then it hardly bears imagining where Ukraine are getting their manpower from. Even if western forces are actually fighting covertly it
likely wouldn’t be large enough numbers (as it cannot be too big) to make any real change. It could be said it has got to the point Ukraine cannot really win because the only way they can gain back any significant enough amount of territory will mean burning through enough of their manpower and resources the country would ultimately be even worse off than if Russia won. Likely the Russians suspend any plans to push past Dobropilia for the time being to try and stabilize the situation near Lyman and push the Ukrainians back. If credit is to be given to the Ukrainians for these actions it is that they are bold and determined when in many ways it’d be easier to go to strictly defensive lines and maybe even negotiate with Russia.

The best way to describe this war is Ukraine is an egg that Russia is slowly squeezing, at first little seems to be happening, then cracks form, some of the yolk slips through the finger and people rush to judgement to say the egg is winning, but everywhere else the egg is getting squished more and more. If Ukraine couldn’t capitalize on Melitopol or Bakhmut or Kursk, or Kupyansk why would anyone assume that Lyman will be any different? Even if they take the city, even if they go beyond it, what does it change?

The Russians should ban any soldiers from withdrawing unless they 1st setup booby traps & remote control explosives 1st, under tiny close circuit cameras so someone in the rear looking at a screen just has to press a button to blow up advancing Ukrainians as they walk or drive past. Remember the Improvised explosive thing in Iraq. There really does seem a lack of initiative with many In the Russian heirachy. Just because there’s no direct order, doesn’t stop soldiers taking the intiative but that seems to be the case with many Russians.

Russia is just holding the fronts to be able to slaughter as many enemy as possible. Russia is not fighting for teritories, but to eliminate the root cause of the war. And Russia do not want to destroy Ukraine, Ukraine will be integrated into Russia and nothing can stop that.

People who keep talking about Ukrainian counter-offensive and recovering territory have not paid attention for 5 years. The Russian army constantly falls back if Ukraine pushes hard, they continually attrite the Ukrainian forces as they fall back having mapped and targeted the ground they retreat from, creating a fire trap. Once they have destroyed the Ukrainian offensive, they simply recover the land. This is NOT a territorial war for Russia.
