Venezuela’s Possible Departure from OPEC May be the Clearest Sign Yet of a Much Larger Strategic Realignment

The United States and Venezuela are reportedly negotiating a “massive” agreement that would give Washington an ownership stake in more than a dozen Venezuelan oilfields, potentially more than doubling current US oil reserves.
Venezuela holds the largest proven oil reserves in the world, yet decades of sanctions, mismanagement and underinvestment have reduced its production to a fraction of its former capacity. With American capital and technology, that could begin to change very quickly.
Leaving OPEC would mean Venezuela could expand production without being constrained by future cartel quotas, redirecting its oil towards the United States while gradually moving out of the OPEC sphere and into an American-controlled energy bloc.
The immediate consequences for the Gulf countries would be limited, but the long-term implications could be enormous: greater competition, downward pressure on oil prices, diminishing Gulf leverage over Washington and a serious weakening of OPEC’s ability to control global supply.
Venezuela was not simply another member of OPEC; it was one of its five founding nations. If Washington succeeds in pulling it away from the cartel while acquiring long-term control over its oilfields, this would represent a fundamental realignment of global energy power.
This is not simply an oil agreement. It is the United States attempting to bring the world’s largest oil reserves firmly within its own sphere of influence, and the Gulf countries will understand exactly what that means.
