Nuclear Hypocrisy: The Untold Story of NUMEC, Israel, and the Vanishing Uranium

By Jamie McIntyre

In the 1960s, up to 600 pounds of highly enriched uranium went missing from a U.S. facility in Apollo, Pennsylvania—enough to build dozens of nuclear warheads. The company at the center of the mystery was NUMEC (Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation), founded by Zalman Shapiro, a prominent Zionist with deep ties to Israel.

Despite investigations by the FBI, CIA, and the Atomic Energy Commission, the case was never resolved. Years later, declassified documents strongly suggested that the uranium was smuggled to Israel—specifically to Dimona, Israel’s secretive nuclear facility in the Negev Desert.

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy became alarmed by Israel’s nuclear ambitions. He demanded full disclosure and U.S. inspections. Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion deflected, stalled, and eventually resigned. His successor followed suit. Then came Kennedy’s assassination, and with it, the end of U.S. pressure.

Since then, no American president has dared confront Israel on its nuclear program.

Today, Israel is estimated to possess between 100 and 300 nuclear warheads, yet it:

Refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)

Allows no international inspections

Faces no sanctions or international accountability

Meanwhile, Iran, a signatory to the NPT with no confirmed nuclear weapons, continues to face crippling sanctions, cyberattacks, assassinations, and constant military threats.

This is nuclear apartheid—a world where allies are shielded from scrutiny, and adversaries are vilified regardless of evidence.

If global leaders are sincere about stopping nuclear proliferation, then the first questions should not be aimed at Tehran—but at Tel Aviv. About the theft. The lies. The undeclared arsenal. And the dangerous precedent it has set.

No accountability. No transparency. No rules. Just impunity.
